International Conference of the Fantastic in the Arts, Mar 14 - 18, 2018, Orlando, Florida
Background:
I hail from Subang Jaya, Selangor, and I lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from 2003 to 2010. I am a product of one middle-class parent and one working-class parent, although, even though I identify as straight-up upper-middle-class bourgeoisie, it's rather difficult to map my family's exact class status according to North American standards. I'm Malaysian-Chinese, which puts me in a class of economic privilege, yet still politically-disenfranchised in my own country. In the U.S. and Canada, I identify variously as Asian, overseas Chinese, a Person of Colour, a (cis)Woman of Colour. I do not identify as Oriental except with extreme sarcasm. I also identify as disabled in certain circles, living with depression.
Education:
I graduated in 2008 with a B.A. Hons. in English, minoring in Creative Writing, from Saint Mary's University. I attended McMaster University for the '10/'11 school year for my M.A. in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory. In between, I learned feminist theory, race relations, and postcolonialism with limited guidance, which became the grounding on which my M.A. and this blog rests. You can read the result of that year here: Chromatic Chronologies: Using the Steampunk Aesthetic for Postcolonial Purposes (PDF)
I recently finished a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Riverside. My dissertation, Shades of Sepia: Examining Eurocentrism and Whiteness in Relation to Multiculturalism in Steampunk Iconograpy, Fandom, and Culture Industry, will be available on ProQuest soon. Watch this blog for its transformation from dissertation into online essay series!

Interested in hearing me talk?
Due to the quarter system, various teaching-assistant duties, and dissertating obligations, my convention schedule is limited to those I am involved with as a panelist or organizer. If I am only attending, then I am limited to cons in my immediate area (Southern California), provided I can get a ride.
I am also available for Racism 101 workshops, although I would advise you to first look for local POC organizations that already provide this service someplace closer to you. However, if we're all gonna be at the same con anyway, let's talk.
Please note that for conventions on the East Coast of the U.S.A., I often present with Ay-Leen the Peacemaker of BeyondVictoriana.com, because we are partners-in-crime that way.
